Major Group initiatives

Collaborations for reuse of nonconforming bananas that cannot be sold

Aiming for the realization of a circular economy to contribute to a sustainable society, the ANA Trading Group manufactures fermented alcohol (ethanol) using nonconforming product from Tanabe Farm. ANA Foods, Co., Ltd., which oversees ANA Trading operations in the food sector, imports and sells bananas cultivated by Tanabe Farm in Ecuador. Alcohol is produced through a fermentation process using nonconforming bananas and organic rice grown on fallow fields managed by Fermenstation, Co., Ltd. Using that alcohol, we developed Hand Wipes Made from Rice and Bananas, a product made from natural ingredients offering 99% disinfecting performance.

Fermenstation works with local communities to create sustainable recycling that produces as little waste as possible. Their activities include producing ethanol by fermenting and distilling unused resources. Distiller meal is used as raw material for cosmetic products and as an ingredient in chicken and cattle feed. They then use that bird and cow dung as fertilizer for rice paddies and grasslands.

Using Fermenstation’s proprietary ethanol refining technology, we commercialized Hand Wipes Made from Rice and Bananas, which are made using nonconforming product from Tanabe Farm and organic rice cultivated in fallow fields, which is an unused resource, to create high-quality concentrated ethanol. The distiller meal produced after the ethanol refinement process is used as feed for cows in the fattening stage in Iwate Prefecture where the distillery is located. In the future, cows raised on this feed will also be used. We will continue to engage in partnerships towards the realization of a circular economy and working to contribute to SDG Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
